Something to Think About

Saturday, April 23, 2011

One of my favourite blogs to read is Peanut Butter Fingers and every time I am reading what Julie has been up to I find something new to admire and love about her.

Today I came across an old post of hers called Midnight Leap Frog. It is a post she wrote while away on a weekend with her mother and sister. The thing I truly love about this post is how it shows Julie's dedication to herself and the healthy lifestyle she embraces and loves so much.

It actually made me feel a little sad with how slack my dedication to my journey has been lately. But, at the same time, I have also been given a new sense of dedication to give to myself. I feel a bit like I have been punched in the face with the reality that if I WANT it (goal weight) then I HAVE to make it happen.

No one is going to do this for me! I certainly don't have a fairy Godmother who is going to wave a magic wand (or pay for lipo) and make me thin. It's time for me to believe in myself and believe that I can do this and that it isn't a waste of my time, because I will get there. It's up to me and me alone - I don't mind being alone, after all, "silence is golden".

Sidenote : my youngest daughter saw the above picture of Julie and so sweetly asked "is that you mummy?" Naturally I couldn't do anything but laugh. I eventually managed an "I wish". Aren't children adorable!!

The Key to my Success

Tuesday, March 8, 2011

My life will not change unless I am the one to change it! I have to make IT happen!

I really need to make a few changes in my life so I can achieve 2 tasks I have set myself for this year. I know 2 tasks doesn't seem like a lot, but for me, they are big tasks. The first is to be able to run a 10 km Fun Run in December and the second task is to be at my goal weight of 60 kg when I do it. I would absolutely love to be at my goal weight by December 1, 2011.

I know that this is not going to happen with me sitting on the couch or just doing my exercise program that I have right now. I need to spice it up and work much harder. I also am well aware that my food has to change drastically. I haven't had chocolate since Christmas and I am not allowed to have any until Easter - I wonder what the Easter Bunny will bring me. I am hoping for one of those Darrell Lea soft and fluffy chocolate covered nougat eggs. With Easter so close Darrell Lea is already filled with these eggs and normally I would have already consumed at least 5 of them, but this year is different. As I have said in other posts, this year, 2011 is MY YEAR!

This is the nougat egg still in the box......

...Opened and ready to eat! A sweet creamy coconutty nougat, yummmo!

This is the chocolate shop it comes from (Darrell Lea) with shelves and shelves of chocolate and sugar treats.

More shelves of chocolate and sugar treats.

I am more determined than ever to reach my goal weight and that is way more important to me than a Darrell Lea Easter egg, but because they are the most delicious Easter treats ever I am going to let myself have one at Easter, just like I allowed myself to have my scorched almonds last Christmas. mmmmmm schorched almonds. That's enough fantasizing for now.

So, the key to my success is me, me and me. I am the only one who can change the way I look and the way I feel about my life. I hate being so overweight, I can't stand it, so why do I self-sabotage my weight loss efforts???? Why? Because I am an idiot perhaps. Just because I go to the gym and do a class or practice my running doesn't mean I can eat whatever I want to eat. According to my training widget I have earned 40 donuts, but I am not going to eat 40 donuts because I know what I have been through physically to earn that many donuts in the first place. Hey! I think I am finally learning something.

At the moment I am trying to focus more on my running as I have 2 months till my first 4 km Fun Run and I can't wait. I am gaining soooooo much inspiration from the running blogs that I follow - a huge favourite of mine is The Hungry Runner Girl. I love this blog because not only do I find Janae extremely motivational, but I find that I am learning from her running experience. Some of her running tips she recently put on her blog were - train in harsh conditions, don't try something new the week of the race and to be your own best friend. I love reading her running stories and how well she does in each one - Thanks Janae, you are a champion!!

Back to me, look in your hand, back at me (just love those Old Spice adds) For some reason, something I have always known has just suddenly clicked in my head. I am responsible for what actions I take and for what I put into my mouth. Why has it taken me sooooo long to get a grip on myself and take responsibility for me. My husband didn't make me fat, being pregnant didn't make me fat, it made me hungry, but I chose what to eat. Not being able to stomach anything that wasn't laden with sugar didn't help, but I still had choices and made all the "wrong" and "bad" ones. From now on I am going to make better, healthier choices and move more, a lot more and finally shift this extra weight that has been plaguing me since 1999.

I got my hair done yesterday so I didn't want to go for a run this morning cause I didn't want to ruin my hair. Any sign of moisture turns it back into an old frizzy mess - what is with that? What sort of an excuse is that? A lame one I think. NO MORE EXCUSES.

Here's a pic. for you to see. My hair is actually very curly so it's not often that it looks really nice and freshly blow dried. I am useless with a hair dryer and can't do my own hair. Also, please excuse my red face, it is still a little sun burned from Sunday's outing and I am not wearing any makup - if squeamish, please look away.

Good-bye Summer......

Wednesday, March 2, 2011

....Hellooooooo Autumn - Woooooo Hooooooo - I love Autumn and Winter! Sorry for all of those out there who love summer, but I don't. I never have and I don't think I ever will. My mum loves summer and it is beyond her that someone, especially me, her daughter, doesn't like the heat. It's not just about the heat, even though that's a big part of it, but there's more to it than that for me.

I love the way the trees change colour in autumn, the reds, the oranges, the golds and even the browns and how the trees are followed by the bareness of winter to reveal a sense of innocence, newness, getting ready for a fresh start in the spring.

Autumn to me is like the "New Year" where nature is getting ready to start again. I look at it as though I am starting to shed the past and put it all behind me. I try to let go of all the bad memories and hard times and get ready to create a new beginning with new memories and this is exactly how I am going to look at my weight loss journey as well.

I am going to put all the failures I have encountered on my journey behind me, they can fall away with the leaves as they leave the trees. I will be very happy not to see those failures ever again. It is time for me to re-focus and think about what I really want and how I am going to get to where I want to be.

So far my Fun Run has been a good start as it has given me something new to look forward to. I am enjoying my "training", I use that word lightly as I feel weird saying that I am in training cause it makes me sound like an athlete which I am not! I am however, 100% fitter now than I was at this time last year and I am at least 10 kilos lighter as well so those are 2 really good positives for me to focus on.

Another 2 positives for me to focus on are : (1) I want to run a 10 km Fun Run in December (blast you summer) and (2) I want to be at my goal weight when I do it. These are the 2 biggest things, regarding my weight journey, that I want out of 2011. I know I can achieve these goals by working hard, but I also know and believe that I have the determination to do it, to achieve these 2 tasks.

To be at goal and fit enough to run 10 kms without stopping by 1 December 2011, I will need to change a few things :
  1. I will not over-obsess about the scales - I will weigh-in fortnightly - NOT daily
  2. I will track every single thing that enters my mouth & eat as healthily as possible - NO take away
  3. I will take my measurements once a month
  4. I will exercise consistently
  5. I WILL learn to like & believe in myself
It's time for a new beginning :)

It's Finally Here!!

I don't know whether to cry or not. I don't feel forty, but when I think about it I feel really old, even though I know I'm not. I remember when I was 18, I couldn't wait to be 21 and I remember thinking how old 40 was and that it was a lifetime away, well that lifetime has finally caught up with me and today, I am 40 years old.

Weight wise, I am not where I wanted to be at this age, but at least I am 20 kilos lighter than last year so that is a bonus, but I have decided to make this year, 2011, my year. This is the year for goal and I am going to restart everything today. I am going to change my weigh-in day to today and just have a fresh start. I am going to revive my ProPoints info and start from scratch with everything - portions, water, exercise the lot.

I AM GOING TO MAKE GOAL BY THE END OF THIS YEAR - 31 DECEMBER 2011.

My Relationship with Food

Thursday, November 11, 2010

I haven't been up to much lately so, I thought I would just ramble a little and write about me and food. My relationship with food has never been a good one. I don't really know how or why I became obsessed with my food or how it all got so messed up.

I was always very active as a child. I was in the swimming club, I played netball, softball and I also did gymnastics. I wasn't a fat child, so I was never picked on about my weight, but for some reason I remember it all went south when I was 13 (first year of high school) so that means that I have been battling food one way or another for 26 years - why have I done this to myself??????????

When I was at high school, I just decided to stop eating. I can't remember what set this off. It wasn't boys because there were no boys at my junior high school. I had given up all my sport except for my netball, this was mainly due to moving interstate. I really wanted to keep up my gymnastics too, but there was none close to where we were living. I really don't know what started this off. Maybe it was because my bestie Tracey and I used to collect Dolly magazines and we wanted to be like the girls in them. Or maybe it was because that since giving up swimming I began to get a little bit of a tummy and Tracey didn't have one so maybe on some sort of subconscience level I was trying to be like Tracey. I noticed that I always ate more than she did, but then Tracey didn't play ANY sport, but back then I don't think I really knew the science behind food and exercise. Maybe that is what triggered my anorexia.

For many years I suffered a silent anorexia, no one knew about it. On all the charts I was classed as underweight, but only by about 5kgs. I don't think it was "real anorexia" I just didn't eat as much as I should have and I would skip meals where possible. As I got older (15) I got a part time job at McDonalds. This is when my eating became a lot worse. I remember there were a couple of other girls working there and all they talked about was their weight and how they wouldn't wear anything bigger than a size 8. Back then a size 8 was tiny, not like now where a size 8 is equal to a 14 in some shops and a 12 in other shops. Anyway, maybe this was another reason my eating got worse, cause I wanted to be "skinny" like them. The thing was though, I was already skinny, I was already below the recommend bottom weight for my height, but when I looked in the mirror I just didn't see it.

While working at McDonalds for the next 3 years while finishing high school, not eating became really easy. I used to ride my bike to school early so no one knew that I hadn't had breakfast. It's easy to put a bowl and spoon in the sink with some water in it so it looks like it has been used and then rinsed. I did always have a salad for lunch so it always looked like I was eating to everyone at school. Most of the days I worked at McDonalds I wouldn't eat, no one noticed, and when I got home I would tell mum that I had eaten at work. I started to drop weight and mum would make a few comments, but I would just tell her that I was tired from school, sport and working part-time and because my mum worked 2 part time jobs she didn't really notice what I was eating. My brother and sister were always off doing something so they never noticed and dad, well dad just never noticed anything or if he did, he never said anything, plus he was always busy at work.

Whenever my friends and I went out I would eat with them, but that was the only meal I would have for the day. I became a 1 meal a day person. Even after high school it seemed to get even worse. I was taking diet pills, I think they were called Medi-Slim or something like that. I would take 1 in the morning - you were supposed to eat 1/2 an hour later, but I never did and the tablets would make me soooo sick. I skipped lunch and then I would take another tablet at dinner which consisted of salad. I was eating 1 salad a day for ages. My body became used to it and eventually I wasn't even hungry anymore. I did drop down to under 50kgs though and with my height of 175cm it was starting to become a little noticeable. My mum and I started to argue about food because she didn't think I was eating properly - she was right, but I would never have admitted it to anyone. In fact, this is the first time I have ever acknowledged this to myself or anyone else.

Eventually after about 5 or 6 years I did start to eat more, but I also developed bulimia. I didn't think it was "real bulimia" because I didn't vomit after every meal. This went on for a few more years until I shared a house with 2 people, 1 was a Hawaiian Ironman triathlete and the other was a girl who loved to ride her bike and run. These 2 people inspired me to adapt a healthy lifestyle. I joined a gym and I began to workout with Wendy. I was actually enjoying my life and food for the first time in years. Eating healthy food - real food. Fresh fruits and veges, seeded breads and so on. I had put on 15kg so I was up to 60kg, which was in my healthy weight range, but I felt great and because I was working out, doing weights, swimming, running, aerobics and even martial arts I had never looked better. I was toned and fit. I felt fit and I looked fit. I was happy.

Then one day I became pregnant. Once I was pregnant with bub #1 my whole outlook on food changed. I was pregnant, I could eat for 2 now - wrong, you still only need to eat for 1. I began to eat stuff that I never ate biscuits, ice-cream, lollies, froot loops. I couldn't workout because I had really bad morning sickness, I was vomiting 24 hours a day for the first 14 weeks of pregnancy and I was studying so it didn't leave much time for the gym. I just craved sugar and that's basically what I lived on for the 9 months till he was born, which left me 30kg overweight.

The worst part was though that I had developed all of these really bad food habits again, but in the opposite direction. Instead of not eating I was over eating, I had become lazy as well and had no urge to go to the gym and I kept eating like I had been eating when I was pregnant. My pregnancy made me really hungry. I knew I had to do something, I had nothing to wear so I joined WW. Eventually I lost 22kg which took me down to 73kg which was the top of my weight range then for some reason I started to put the weight back on. By the time I fell pregnant with bub #2 I was already 100kg and I had Type 2 diabetes. Amazingly, I managed to lose weight during this pregnancy and after I had her, I was 95kg. I decided that I was tired of being so overweight so I went back to WW and got down to 86kg before finding out I was pregnant with twins so I stopped the program again. I blew up to 122.2kg by the end of my pregnancy. After having the twins I was 104kg, but again with all the overeating I had been doing during my pregnancy, I just couldn't stop and I ended up at 115kg and even my maternity clothes weren't fitting anymore.

THIS was my FINAL WW moment. I knew I had to do something about this and I did. I am now back under 100kg. I am eating healthy foods and not craving the sugary things anymore and I am back at the gym. A gym I love and can't wait to go to everyday. For the first time ever in my life I can honestly say that I believe in me, that I can do this and that I will do this.

That is my story and my unhealthy relationship with food which is why I am where I am today. I am sure though, with hard work and determination, I will one day be back at my 60kg goal.

Chocolate Challenge

Tuesday, October 5, 2010

I have decided to give myself a NO chocolate challenge till Christmas. This is mainly because I know that on Christmas day I will definitely be cracking open the scorched almonds. Scorched almonds on Christmas day is my tradition, it is the only time of the year that I have them, well 2 days to be exact - Christmas day and Boxing day. I am giving myself this challenge because I really want to enjoy my almonds, I don't just want to scoff them down because it is Christmas. I want to learn to savour my treats and look forward to them not to mention how swearing off chocolate for the next couple of months will help greatly towards my weight loss.

I am also hoping to lose 10 kilos by Christmas day. There is 11 weigh-ins left until then and I am prepared to give it my all. If giving up chocolate completely for the next 11 weeks means meeting my 10 kilo goal, then I will do it. If I have to go to the gym everyday and work my butt off, then I will do it. If it means never having another softdrink again, then I will do it. I am determined and willing to do whatever it takes to reach my ultimate goal.

I am sick of being morbidly obese and I don't just want to lose weight to be just obese. I want to be in the healthy weight range. I want to have a healthy BMI. I have been battling with my weight for several years now - since my first child was born 11 years ago. I have lost the weight, then gained, then lost again and gained even more but this time something feels different. I think, well actually, I know that this time I really do BELIEVE in myself, I finally believe that I CAN do this, I believe that I WILL do this. My self belief is what has been missing in my success or lack of success. I have learned through this blog and through reading so many other blogs, stories and successes that it is essential for me to believe in ME. It is something that I have never done before so it is a strange concept for me. One thing I want even more than reaching goal, which goes hand in hand with reaching my goal weight is my self-esteem. I want my self-esteem back.

I really don't have any self-esteem, courage or self worth and I haven't for a very long time and this makes me very sad. I am actually too embarrassed to eat in public because of my size and I hate this feeling, I hate the way it makes me feel and I don't want to feel this way anymore. I am sooooo over being fat and miserable. It is time for me to take control of my life (and food) once and for all and I will do whatever I need to do to make this happen.

32 Weeks

Monday, June 28, 2010

Today there is exactly 32 weeks till my 40th birthday and I would love to be apart of that old cliche 'Fabulous at Forty'. I would love to be at goal by then but to lose a little over 40kg in 32 weeks is a big ask but I am going to strive towards it and with a loss of 1.4kg this week I am on my way.

I actually took a photo of all the clothes in my wardrobe that are too small for me but can't wait to wear (again). I put them all onto the 1 page, printed them out and put it on the fridge. Next to that I have stuck a photo of myself. The photo of me was taken a couple of months after I had my twins and I was weighing in at 115.2kg. I can't fit into the clothes YET but the skirt I had on in the photo is too big for me now so that is a great positive for me to look at and soon hopefully all of my "fat" clothes will be too big.

I am still really excited about the Christmas challenge as I would love, love, love to be in the low 70's by then and now I have an extra incentive to keep me going - the big 40. If I can make it to the low 70's by Christmas my goal weight will be even closer for the birthday in February. I will have to add a new Birthday Challenge to my WW signature which will help to keep me accountable for all the choices I make whether good or not so good :)
