Snickerdoodles! What are they? Delicous!

Friday, March 4, 2011

I had my very first snickerdoodle today. I was reading a blog the other day (Hungry Runner Girl) and she mentioned she was making her husband snickerdoodles. I had never heard of, or seen a snickerdoodle before so I followed the links till I found the recipe she had used and WOW, they are delicious. It would have to be one of the nicest things I have ever put into my mouth. I only had a couple as I don't think they would be very good for weight loss.

Luckily I documented the process on film and they are soooooo nice, I just have to share!

First I got my ingredients ready - sugar, plain (all-purpose) flour, margarine, eggs, vanilla, cream of tartar, bi-carb (or baking) soda, salt and ground cinnamon.

The next thing I did was make up the sugar and cinnamon mix for rolling the dough in - it was 2 tbs of sugar and 2 tsp of cinnamon - I ended up having to make a little more later on so in future I will use 3 sugar and 3 cinnamon instead.

I turned on my oven to pre-heat. The recipe said 400 degrees F or 205 degrees C. I have a weird oven that likes to burn everything so I did 180 degrees C. I measured out 1 1/2 cups of sugar, 1/2 cup margarine, 2 eggs and 1 tsp of vanilla extract into a large bowl.......

....and mixed away - combine well.

Next I filled my sifter with 2 3/4 cups of flour, 1 tsp cream of tartar, 1/2 tsp bi-carb soda and 1/4 tsp of salt.
I sifted 1/3 of the flour into the sugar mix and stirred it in..........

....then repeated the process 2 more times until the flour was all gone to make a soft dough.

Finally I made lots of little 1 inch balls, rolled them in the sugar and cinnamon mix and placed them on an un-greased piece of baking paper a few cms apart. I put 16 on the tray and had to do 4 and a bit batches. They tray looks greased, but that's because I put some butter underneath the baking paper to stick it down.

I put the first tray in the oven.......

Set my trusty pink egg timer for 8 mins......

Voila, they are done!

Take them off the baking tray as soon as they come out of the oven and put them on a wire cooler.

Here is one of my helpers, helping herself to a snickerdoodle!

  1. Talk about a timely post. My mother was baking these last week for my American brother in law, who loves snickerdoodles. The name alone gets me giggling. I am yet to try one, and would be keen to try sugar free,
